How We Do What We Do

The “All-One!” Method

The following five “Pillars of Commitment” comprise the foundation of how we operate in order to carry out our business philosophy within our sphere of influence:

  1. Commitment to Quality: Produce the highest quality products in an ethical and environmentally sound way

Dr. Bronner’s is an independently-owned and family-run company. Our soaps are synonymous with Old-World quality and time-honored simplicity, which can be traced back to the family’s German-Jewish soapmaking tradition. We treat our workers right, promote sustainable practices, and certify to the most rigorous organic, Fair Trade and cruelty-free standards. All our soaps and personal care products are not only certified by Oregon Tilth to the same USDA National Organic Program standards that certify organic foods, they are also certified as Fair Trade by the respected Swiss certifier IMO. Our soaps are completely biodegradable and vegetable-based, and use no synthetic foaming agents, thickeners or preservatives. We have pioneered the use of 100% post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic bottles and also use 100% PCR paper labels.

In addition to our world-renowned personal care lines, we are also dedicated to providing and developing the best organic and Fair Trade-sourced food products, such as our best-selling virgin coconut oil.

  2. Commitment to Family: Model progressive business practices

Dr. Bronner’s is a family business, and we consider all who work with us to be part of our extended family. We recognize the important roles of all our employees in every position of the company, and we pride ourselves on providing them with our unique benefits and compensation programs. The total compensation of our highest-paid employees and executives is capped at five times that of the lowest-paid position. Our employees receive 15% of their salary paid annually into a retirement/profit-sharing plan, up to 25% of their salary as a bonus, and a no-deductible PPO health insurance plan for themselves and their families. We implement approaches within our workplace to encourage personal growth and development, and we strive to create a healthy environment for workers to thrive and take pride in their contributions to the broader world community through their work at Dr. Bronner’s.

  3. Commitment to Responsibility: Build an equitable and sustainable supply chain

Dr. Bronner’s is committed to sourcing our raw materials from Fair Trade projects around the world that ensure a fair price, living wage and community benefits for farmers, workers, and their families. We have directly established or partnered with Fair Trade projects in Ecuador, Ghana, Kenya, India, Israel, Mexico, Palestine, Sri Lanka, and Zambia. We are also working to support the development of domestic Fair Trade programs here in North America as well. We are committed to building lasting relationships with farmers and workers throughout our supply chain, and to helping improve their communities.

An estimated 10,000 people around the world benefit directly from participating in Dr. Bronner’s supply chains. To date, our Fair Trade premiums have helped our producer communities around the world: build schools and fresh-water wells; set up composting operations that improve farmers’ yields and incomes; and support health care initiatives through sponsoring health clinics, purchasing medical equipment and providing mosquito nets to prevent the spread of malaria.

  4. Commitment to Advocacy: Fund and fight for causes we believe in

Dr. Bronner’s is the “fighting soap company” — we fight for and financially support causes that we believe in. Major causes we have focused on include organic integrity in personal care, re-commercialization of industrial hemp in the U.S., promotion of Fair Trade certification to ensure the fair compensation and just treatment of farmers and workers, prisoner re-entry programs, supporting consumers’ right to know what’s in their food by advocating for the labeling of foods containing Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs), drug policy reform, environmental protection, youth programs, peace and human rights campaigns, anti-poverty initiatives, and generally promoting social justice and equality at home and abroad.

  5. Commitment to Philanthropy: Share our profits to support all kinds of great things

Over the last five years, Dr. Bronner’s total contributions to social and environmental causes and charities, and to community development programs, has roughly matched our total after-tax income. We have established The Dr. Bronner Family Foundation to act both locally and globally. Over the years, we have continually dedicated profits to support positive development projects that improve and enrich people’s quality of life. Some examples include building schools in the Chiapas region of Mexico and orphanages in Haiti and China, helping organic farm projects across the country, donating over 1,200 acres of land to the San Diego County Boys and Girls Club, and supporting our local food bank as well as other charities in the San Diego area.

Dr. Bronner would be happy to know that the business is running better and is more socially responsible today than ever
