A Look at the Ingredients List
Dr. Bronner’s Liquid Soaps are formulated with a select blend of organic and fair trade oils, alkali, and essential oils. Each ingredient serves a specific purpose, ensuring the soap is gentle, effective, and environmentally friendly.
Water
Water is the base of the formula, helping dissolve and distribute the soap’s ingredients evenly for a smooth and effective lather.
Organic Coconut Oil
Organic coconut oil is a key ingredient that provides the soap with its rich, foamy lather. It is deeply cleansing yet remains gentle on the skin. In 2024, Dr. Bronner’s increased the amount of coconut oil in their formula to support more regenerative organic farms worldwide, reinforcing their commitment to sustainability.
Potassium Hydroxide
This ingredient is essential for the saponification process—transforming oils into soap. Importantly, no potassium hydroxide remains in the final product after the reaction, leaving behind only soap.
Organic Palm Oil
Palm oil contributes to the fatty acid profile essential to our soap’s rich, copious lather and overall product experience our customers love.
Organic Olive Oil
Organic olive oil contributes a smooth, creamy quality to the soap’s lather.
Organic Jojoba Wax (Previously Listed as Jojoba Oil)
Jojoba is chemically a liquid wax ester rather than a traditional oil. “Jojoba oil” and “jojoba wax” refer to the same plant-derived ingredient, which remains part of our carefully balanced oil blend. This makes it an excellent ingredient for giving the skin a soft feeling. The label now correctly refers to it as “Jojoba Wax” to ensure compliance with Dr. Bronner’s regenerative organic claims.
Organic Hemp Seed Oil
Organic hemp seed oil remains part of the formula and contributes to the soap’s smooth lather, even though “hemp” was removed from the product name in 2025.
Essential Oils
Dr. Bronner’s soaps come in a variety of scents, each made with pure essential oils:
- Peppermint: Provides a refreshing and cooling sensation (now with a label warning that it may be too intense for children under 3 years old).
- Lavender: Calming and soothing, great for relaxation.
- Tea Tree: Woodsy and herbal (not recommended for use on pets due to tea tree oil’s toxicity to animals).
- Eucalyptus: Invigorating and relieving (contains eucalyptol, which may be irritating to babies and children).
- Unscented: Free of essential oils for the most sensitive skin.
- Almond: Warm and nutty with a comforting scent.
- Citrus: Uplifting and bright, with a fresh, fruity aroma.

Citric Acid
Citric acid helps balance the pH of the soap, ensuring it remains gentle on the skin while still being effective at breaking down dirt and oils.
Tocopherol (Vitamin E)
Tocopherol, a form of vitamin E, helps maintain the quality of the formula by protecting its oil-based ingredients from oxidation.
Limonene, Geraniol, Linalool, Citral, Citronellol
These are terpenes, or scent compounds, that are naturally present in the essential oils that we use to scent our soaps. These were always present in our soaps, but we now list them out separately to meet our EWG (Environmental Working Group) Verification requirements. Some people can be allergic to these terpenes, which is why EWG requires them to be listed in the ingredient deck.
Limonene is present in most of our scented soaps. Geraniol is present in our Lavender soap, while Citral and Linalool are present in our Citrus soap. Our Rose and Green Tea scents contains several terpenes: Citronellol, Geraniol, Limonene, and Linalool. If you are looking for a soap completely free of terpenes, choose our Unscented variety!
Why These Ingredients Matter
Ingredients matter for two reasons: they shape how a soap cleans, lathers, smells, and rinses, and they connect every bottle to the farms, workers, and communities that produce its agricultural ingredients.
Made with Organic and Regenerative Organic Certified® Oils
Our Pure-Castile Magic Soap is made with organic plant oils, including coconut, palm kernel, olive, hemp seed, and jojoba. Several of these key oils are also Regenerative Organic Certified®.
Regenerative Organic Certified® uses USDA Organic as its baseline, then adds high-bar requirements covering soil health and land management, animal welfare, and fairness for farmers and workers. This gives shoppers an independently audited standard that considers not only how an ingredient is grown, but also the people and agricultural systems behind it.
Because the finished formula also includes water, potassium hydroxide used during saponification, and other non-agricultural ingredients, the precise description is “made with organic oils” rather than calling the entire product an “organic soap.”
Sourced Through Long-Term Partnerships
Our ingredient supply chains extend around the world. Key partnerships include coconut oil projects in Sri Lanka and Samoa, palm kernel oil from smallholder farms in Colombia, olive oil from fair trade partners in Palestine and Israel, and mint oil from India. The palm oil used in our Bar Soap comes from Ghana, while 100% of the organic hemp seed oil used in our soaps and other products is sourced from U.S. farmers.
Many of these agricultural ingredients are also certified fair trade. Fair trade standards add requirements related to fair pricing, working conditions, long-term trading relationships, and community investment. The goal is not simply to purchase a raw material, but to build more transparent supply chains that support ingredient quality, farmers, workers, and their communities.
Why Ingredient Choices Matter to the Finished Soap
Different plant oils have different fatty acid profiles, so each one contributes differently to the character of the finished soap. Coconut and palm kernel oils help create a rich lather. Olive, hemp seed, and jojoba round out the oil blend and help give the soap its smooth lather and clean-rinsing feel.
The other ingredients have clear purposes, too. Potassium hydroxide transforms the plant oils into liquid soap during saponification. Citric acid fine-tunes the formula after soapmaking. Essential oils and natural fragrance ingredients create each scent, while tocopherol helps maintain product quality.
Together, these ingredients create a concentrated true soap that cleans effectively without synthetic detergents, dyes, or added foaming agents. Ingredient descriptions should remain focused on cleaning, formulation, lather, scent, and other product characteristics rather than implying cosmetic or therapeutic skin benefits.
EWG VERIFIED® for Ingredient Safety and Transparency
Most Dr. Bronner’s Pure-Castile Magic Soap scents are EWG VERIFIED®, meaning they meet the Environmental Working Group’s strict standards for product formulation, ingredient safety, and transparency.
To qualify for the EWG VERIFIED® mark, a personal care product must:
- Avoid ingredients on EWG’s unacceptable list.
- Meet EWG’s restrictions for ingredients that require concentration limits or other conditions.
- Fully disclose ingredients, including ingredients used in fragrances.
- Follow European Union requirements for labeling fragrance allergens.
- Follow current good manufacturing practices.
This added transparency is why naturally occurring scent constituents such as limonene, linalool, geraniol, citral, and citronellol now appear separately in certain ingredient lists. These components were not necessarily newly added to the soap; listing them gives shoppers more complete information about the essential oils and natural fragrance ingredients in each scent.
The Eucalyptus scent is the exception and does not currently carry the EWG VERIFIED® mark because its concentration of eucalyptus essential oil exceeds the program’s limit.
EWG verification complements our organic, fair trade, and Regenerative Organic Certified® standards rather than replacing them. Organic and regenerative organic certifications primarily address how agricultural ingredients are grown and sourced, while EWG VERIFIED® evaluates the finished formulation and its ingredient disclosure.
No certification can eliminate every possible individual sensitivity. Always read the product label and follow its scent-specific directions. For those who prefer a soap with no added fragrance, choose Baby Unscented.
Taken together, these standards provide a clearer answer to three important questions: What is in the bottle? Why is each ingredient there? And how were the key agricultural ingredients sourced? That transparency is central to how we make soap—from soil to shelf,
