Top-Selling Soap Brand, Dr. Bronner’s and Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego Celebrate Over Two Decades of Partnership

2018 Marks Third Year of Five Year-Half Million Dollar Pledge to Support the Community Organization’s Growth and Impact

January 24, 2018

VISTA, CA – Dr. Bronner’s, family-owned maker of the top-selling natural brand of soap in North America, is proud to mark its 22nd year of ongoing commitment to support the work of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego (BGCGSD). Since 1996, Dr. Bronner’s has made regular financial donations to the organization in support of their mission to inspire and enable youth to achieve academic excellence, build good character and responsible citizenship, and make healthy lifestyle choices.

Dr. Bronner’s support for BGCGSD was pioneered by Jim Bronner, former president of Dr. Bronner’s and son of company founder Emanuel Bronner. Jim served on the board of the BGCGSD from 1996-1998, and spearheaded the donation of 1,000 acres of land valued at $1.4 million to the organization. His wife Trudy Bronner, Dr. Bronner’s Chief Financial Officer since 1993, has served on the BGCGSD board since 1998. In addition to this donation of land, Dr. Bronner’s has donated a total of more than $1,000,000 to support BGCGSD and its youth programming over the years. Dr. Bronner’s is currently in the third year of fulfillment of a $500,000 pledge, set to be completed in 2020.

“Jim, having spent part of his life in foster homes, knew from experience the positive guidance that well-run youth programs provide to disadvantaged youth,” says Trudy Bronner, Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of Dr. Bronner’s. “He saw the potential in working with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego, and we’re proud to continue our support in his memory.”

Dr. Bronner’s legacy of support to BGCGSD includes the donation of $1 million in 2012 for the renovation and modernization of the Valley Center Upper Elementary School, turning it into an innovative joint-use facility, named the James A. Bronner Family Branch, in honor of Jim and the Bronner family’s commitment. The project included the creation of flexible spaces for art rooms, computer labs, conference rooms, and Club staff, in addition to a spacious multipurpose room.

“As a family and company, we’re excited to fund and support projects that make a real difference in people’s lives and communities, and we’re inspired by those who do this work,” says Lisa Bronner, Jim and Trudy’s daughter, who is a spokesperson for the company and gives healthy living and family advice in her blog, Going Green with a Bronner Mom. “The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego isn’t just an organization that prepares young people for life, it’s a place that gives them opportunities to shape their lives for the better. This programming for children and youth is essential and life-affirming at the same time,” continues Bronner.

This year, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego is celebrating 75 years of its mission to inspire and enable youth to achieve academic success, build good character and responsible citizenship, and make healthy lifestyle choices through 20 community sites in San Diego County.

“We are proud to have had the support of three generations of the Bronner family over the past years and are grateful for their continued commitment. We provide children ages 5 to 18 years-old with a safe place to learn and grow; promote health and well-being; develop mentor relationships with caring adult professionals and offer hope and opportunity for the future,” says Danny Sherlock, CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego.
