Raw Material Inspector

OVERVIEW & JOB SUMMARY

Under direct and general supervision of the Quality Control Supervisor, the Raw Material Inspector coordinates quality control within raw material inspections. Responsible for examining and inspecting materials against specifications to identify defects and trends. Performs organoleptic and technical duties to ensure the ongoing compliance of Dr. Bronner’s raw materials to company quality standards and specifications.   Provides administrative and creative support enabling continuous improvement of the quality control program.

This position is located at Dr. Bronner’s headquarters in Vista, CA, and will not be a remote position once Covid-19 restrictions are lifted.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

QC on in-bound Raw Materials:

  • Track timing of arrival and prioritize material evaluation with production and warehouse staff as needed based on inventory. Attend to Raw Material pre-ship samples from approved suppliers, Raw Material shipment samples on arrival to the warehouse, Tank Bulk Samples, and Bulk and WIP samples from contract manufacturers.
  • Conduct sampling from the production floor or warehouse.
  • Review Certificate of Analysis, Gas Chromatogram Results, Specification sheets, and any other paperwork accompanying material; compare to target values and specifications; file paperwork.
  • Organoleptically evaluate and compare the sample to target.
  • Communicate disposition to appropriate staff.
  • Complete Inspection Report and Recommend disposition to QC Supervisor.
  • Support investigations in determining when rejections should require alternative or supporting inspection.
  • Coordinate raw material rework or inquiry communication with Quality Control Management and others as needed.
  • Label, organize, and store raw material, work-in-progress, retains, and targets; Manage storage for expiration and remove expired materials to make use of space for new raw material retains.
  • Select, collect and replace Targets/Control Samples every 3 months.

Lab and Bench Scale Testing:

  • Use lab equipment including but not limited to a refractometer, viscometer, and a hot plate to evaluate raw materials. Collect and record data, review and file all documents, inspection report and recommend a disposition.
  • Coordinate with Production staff to prepare sample/bench-scale test batches of product with raw material under evaluation. Evaluate the samples organoleptically; review and file all documents that come with the sample, label and store the samples; accordingly, approve the material if it complies.

Quality Document Preparation:

  • Monitor shelf life of all raw materials to ensure FIFO.
  • Track all conditional releases of raw material that are used internally and materials that are provided to our co-manufacturers.
  • Write or review SOPs and WI documents for QC tasks as needed.
  • Create and update approved supplier and raw material charts.
  • Prepare and send documentation and accompanying physical samples of raw materials to existing or new suppliers or co-manufacturers.
  • Review, enter and maintain QC data in QMS Database System.

Out of Specification Investigation Support:

  • Escalated Raw Material or WIP: Pull retains as needed. Oversee a panel of evaluators and execute a double-blind test. Determine if the product can be released for production or put-on QC Hold for further investigation and/or rework.
  • Verify accurate inventory accounting of affected products for CAPA reports.
  • Support Shipping Department questions on release status.

Other:

  • Provide administrative assistance to the Quality Department and OSI Department as needed.
  • Cross-train to perform sampling or testing duties of QC Inspector, In-Process Inspector, and QA Associate as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned within the job scope

INTERACTION

This position will interact closely with Quality Control Supervisor, Senior Manager of Quality, Quality Department, Plant Operations Manager, Shipping Supervisor, Production Administration team, Marketing team, Production Supervisor, Logistics Coordinator, and key warehouse workers.

EDUCATION/YEARS EXPERIENCE

Minimum: Completion of a high school diploma or GED. Three years of progressive experience in a fast-paced, collaborative office, CPG, and/manufacturing environment.

Preferred: Three years of experience in Quality Control, QA or QC laboratory, Raw Materials Evaluation, Personal care, consumer products, and/or manufacturing experience. Quality Control certification is a plus.

Any combination of education and work experience that would be equivalent to the stated minimum requirements would qualify for consideration of this position.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Must be proficient in the operation of standard office support equipment including, but not limited to, personal computer, copier/scanner, fax, telephone system, etc.

Familiar with Viscometer, Refractometer, other various lab equipment.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS

Must have reliable transportation and possess and maintain a valid California driver’s license including proof of personal vehicle insurance coverage and insurability under the Company’s insurance carrier standards.

  • Occasionally is required to perform the safe operation of a vehicle, office equipment, and machines, and recognize and abate safety hazards within the workplace.

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate (in a plant environment).
