Hemp Oil from Canada
Hemp oil is a key ingredient in our soaps, lotions and balms. Because U.S. farmers are not currently allowed to grow or process industrial hemp, we source roughly twenty tons of organic fairDeal hemp oil from Canadian farmers.
Dr. Bronner’s uses hemp oil as a superfatting ingredient in all our soaps because of its unsurpassed essential fatty acid (EFA) content. Hemp oil makes our soap lather smoother and less drying, and it is an excellent moisturizer in our lotions and balms.
Industrial hemp is the non-psychoactive varieties of the Cannabis plant grown for fiber and seed. Hemp has a remarkable number of beneficial uses. Its excellent fiber can replace glass fibers in construction and automotive composites, and pesticide-intensive cotton in textiles. Its nutritious seed contains an ideal balance of the omega-3 and omega-6 EFAs needed for healthy heart and brain function, in addition to providing well-balanced, easily digestible protein. Because of its huge market potential and high biomass/cellulose content, hemp is also an ideal future crop for producing bio-ethanol and bio-plastics from waste straw. However, the U.S. government, alone among the major industrialized nations, effectively prohibits domestic hemp cultivation — due primarily to the “reefer madness” and confusion regarding hemp’s psychoactive cousin, “marijuana.”
The Bronner family is committed to helping transition our major industries away from polluting, using unsustainable materials and adopting methods for the use of cleaner, more sustainable ones. We support hemp’s full re-commercialization in agriculture, manufacturing and trade, and we look forward to the day soon when we can source our hemp oil from American farmers.
