Pay Practices & Employment Benefits
Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps strives to maintain highly competitive compensation and benefit plans for all our valued employees to the extent the company’s profitability allows. Below, we have outlined the pay practices and various employment benefits enjoyed by all our full-time employees.
Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps evaluates each of our jobs annually based on regional data compiled from comparable organizations. While our goal is to be one of the best-paying manufacturing companies of its kind in San Diego County, we must also adapt to changing economic conditions. We consider total compensation (pay plus benefits) when comparing our company to other similar organizations. Therefore, given sufficient profitability, we often adjust our wages annually, based on changes in the regional cost of living index, as well as offer merit pay opportunities.
Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps has adopted a weekly and monthly pay period plan, whereby weekly pay periods run from each Wednesday through the following Tuesday, with paydays occurring on the following Friday. For many exempt positions, the pay period is from the first day to the last day of each month, with payments made on the last regular weekly payday of the month.
Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps recognizes the following annual holidays. Full-time employees are eligible for holiday pay following their initial “Introductory Period.” Other details concerning holiday pay are included in our orientation and Employee Handbook.

Paid Time Off (PTO)
Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps offers full-time employees paid time off (PTO) that begins to accrue on the first day of employment (but cannot be used during the initial “Introductory Period”). PTO may be used for vacations, sick leave, personal appointments, family matters, a dependent’s school activities, religious observances and the like. Unused PTO at the end of each calendar year is paid off and begins to accrue on a quarterly advance system on the first of each new calendar year, based on the following schedule:

Medical, Life and Dental Insurance Plans
Excluding temporary employees, all other employees at Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps who are regularly scheduled to work 24+ hours per week are eligible to enroll in our medical, life, long-term disability and dental insurance plans on the first day of the month following the successful completion of their initial “Introductory Period.” We currently pay the premiums in full for each employee’s choice of medical and dental plan coverage, and we pay the premiums in full for an individual $25,000 term life insurance policy and long-term disability policy. Medical benefits include comprehensive medical, health, emergency and prescription drug services. Dental benefits include comprehensive services with an annual maximum payout, and some services require a co-payment by the employee.
Health Reimbursement Account
Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps currently provides employees covered by our medial plan with a self-insured Health Reimbursement Account (HRA) plan to safeguard against financial hardships experienced by eligible employees with a costly medical condition, in light of our high-deductible medical plan. Under the combined medical and HRA plans, we pay up to a maximum pre-determined amount that goes toward the employee’s annual deductible and co-insurance claims costs for each plan year. Doing so helps each employee pay for certain medical needs, such as doctor’s office visits, co-payments for lab or radiology work, medical devices, prescription medications and the like. No contributions to the HRA are required by employees, although they may be required to pay some amount toward co-payments.
Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps follows a time-honored philosophy of sharing the rewards of the work necessary to produce profits, to be used for our workers and philanthropic giving. To that end, we are one of very few companies that provide each employee with an annual bonus. Here, however, we target our annual bonus to be 25% of base pay, which is both discretionary and determined by our profits and our employees’ individual performance. Bonus checks are normally distributed on the first Friday of each December at our annual holiday gathering, which is followed by a company-paid dinner for employees and their immediate family members, celebrating holiday festivities at a local restaurant.
Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps provides a Profit Sharing Plan (PSP) as the retirement savings method used for full-time employees, starting on the first day of January or July following the successful completion of the initial twelve months of employment consisting of 1,000+ worked hours. We make a discretionary fixed contribution to each eligible employee’s account, based on our annual profitability. The PSP does not require nor allow employee contributions.
All eligible employees receive benefit plan information during their initial “Introductory Period,” which includes Summary Plan Descriptions defining the benefits, exclusions and limitations of each plan. We reserve the right to change, suspend or eliminate any benefit at our sole discretion. In such cases, all affected employees will be notified in advance.
